GTA 6 vs GTA 5: every confirmed difference
A direct comparison of GTA 6 and GTA 5 based on officially confirmed information — platforms, protagonists, map, online mode and release.

GTA 5 launched in 2013 and became one of the best-selling games in history. GTA 6 arrives in November 2026. Here is every confirmed difference between the two — based only on official information from Rockstar Games.

Setting
GTA 5 took place in Los Santos, a fictional version of Los Angeles and the surrounding state of San Andreas. The map covered urban, desert, mountain and rural environments across roughly 49 km².
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional state based on Florida. The map centers on Vice City — a reimagined Miami — with surrounding wetlands, coastal areas and smaller towns. Rockstar has confirmed it is larger than GTA 5.
Protagonists
GTA 5 introduced three playable protagonists for the first time in the series: Michael, Trevor and Franklin. Players could switch between them freely in open world, with specific characters required for certain missions.
GTA 6 reduces this to two protagonists: Jason and Lucia. Lucia is the first playable female character in a mainline GTA game. The exact switching mechanic has not been confirmed.
Platforms at launch
GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, then received enhanced versions on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, and again on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. A PC version arrived in 2015.
GTA 6 launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. There is no confirmed last-gen version and no confirmed PC release date.
This is a significant difference. GTA 6 requires current-generation hardware from day one.
Online mode
GTA Online launched alongside GTA 5 in 2013 and became a separate, continuously updated live service. For PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners it was eventually available as a standalone free download.
GTA 6 Online is confirmed and will be integrated into the base game from launch. Rockstar has not released details about how it will differ structurally from GTA Online, but the integration suggests a tighter connection between story and online modes.

What this means
GTA 6 is not an incremental update. The platform exclusivity, the new protagonist structure and the Florida setting all represent deliberate departures from GTA 5's formula.
Whether those changes make it better will only be clear after launch. What is clear now is that Rockstar has made significant design decisions rather than repeating what worked before.
